Are your 308 80 Lowers Mil-Spec?

That’s a loaded question. The Department of Defense or military did not adopt any of the Armalite AR-10 models. So, there would not be a mil-spec for those firearms. But, for our SR25/AR10 80 lower, we’ve designed it after the original Armalite AR-10 A-model. That profile is common among AR-10 rifles and lowers. Rifles like the SR25 have it.

We bought a DPMS upper and lower receiver set for our DPMS Gen-1 LR-308 80 lower receiver. Then, we reverse engineered them. Our lowers fit their upper, and our upper fits their lower. There is no mil-spec for the 308 AR-10 models. But, we machine our billet aluminum lowers to tighter tolerances. They are tighter than those found in shops. We machine the entire lower, including faces. So, we hold much tighter machining tolerances.

Are AR-10 308 80 percent lowers legal to own and build?

Yes, under the Gun Control Act of 1968 (GCA), you can legally build your own firearm for personal use in every U.S. state. You can do this if you can own a gun. Some states, like New Jersey, have “Assault Weapon” bans. So, you can’t build a firearm that would meet those criteria. But, you could still build a handgun or a 10/22.

Is a serial number or other mark required?

Unless you transfer the completed lower or any other mark. Unless you transfer the completed lower or firearm in the future. You can put a serial number on it to aid recovery if lost or stolen, which we would recommend.

Will it’s me that needs an FFL or to do a transfer?

You don’t need an FFL to finish your AR-10 308 80 percent lower. When finished, you won’t need to do a transfer to yourself. If you sell the completed lower or firearm to which you assembled it, you do not need an FFL. This is true as long as you did not complete the lower and build the firearm to resell it.

Are your 308 80 lowers made from 6061 or 7075 aluminum?

We make all our alloys in 6061-T6. We realize that some customers prefer 7075-T6. So, we offer that as an option on occasion. 7075 can raise the material cost a lot over 6061, such as 2.6 to 1. So, we have to charge more for it.
